🚛GoPuff raised $1.5B (yes, you read that right) to further expand its sub-30 minutes delivery service. It currently operates more than 250 micro-fulfillment centers, nestled within residential areas to provide delivery 24/7.

🦄Berlin-based on-demand grocery delivery service Gorillas secured $290M and became a unicorn, with a valuation that surpasses $1B, just nine months after its launch. The startup offers a ‘dark store’ model, which allows it to fulfill customer orders in as little as ten minutes.

🥚Eat Just Inc. closed a $200M funding round, bringing its total funding to date to more than $650M. It plans to build capacity for its plant-based egg and cell-based chicken products to bring them to more consumers around the globe.

🧫Dutch cultivated meat startup Meatable secured $47M Series A funding. It can currently produce cell-based meat without the use of fetal bovine serum in a matter of days, but at a cost of $10k per pound, so will use the funding to advance small-scale production and work on bringing the cost down.

🖥iFoodDS closed $15M series A funding for its fresh food supply chain management software. The platform allows supply chain constituents to better track food safety, traceability, quality management, and transparency.

🥩Australian food tech Nourish Ingredients raised $11M to further develop its fermented plant-based fats, which are molecularly identical to animal fats but cruelty-free.

🛸Tel Aviv-based Flytrex landed $8M to expand its US drone delivery operations. As of 2020, its craft had completed more than 1000 deliveries in Iceland and has been operating on a limited basis in the US, including a pilot program with Walmart.

🧫Berlin-based Bluu Biosciences raised €7M to further develop its cell-based salmon, trout, and carp, hopefully bringing them closer to commercialisation.

💪🥕US foodtech Amfora raised $6M series B funding for its technology which can increase the protein content of crops used in human food and animal feed. It’s currently focused on making soy a more economical and sustainable ingredient for plant-based meat replacements.

☕️Quantum Energy Squares secured $2.5M seed funding for its plant-based, coffee-infused energy bars. It plans to focus on growing its reach in the natural channel and expanding into the sports and convenience channels in 2021.

🐔British vegan fried ‘chicken’ firm VFC Foods, founded by Veganuary co-founder Matthew Glover, closed $2.5M seed funding to scale up its production and accelerate its brand growth in the UK and internationally.

🥜Clean label nut butter and snack brand Abby’s Better raised £1m seed funding to scale its operations. Its products are sweetened with fruits or honey instead of artificial sweeteners and are gluten-free, peanut-free, paleo-friendly and plant-based.

🚲British 30-minute grocery delivery service Grocemania secured £165k on crowdfunding platform Seedrs, to fuel its nationwide service expansion, having seen its monthly revenue double YOY since the start of the pandemic.

🌱South Korean plant-based meat firm Viomix Tech closed an undisclosed series A round to grow its product portfolio and expand into international markets.

Mergers & Acquisitions:

  • 🛍Carrefour is acquiring Brazil’s third-biggest food retailer Grupo Big from Walmart in a deal valued at $1.1B. Carrefour intends to strengthen its presence in Brazil and offer a broader range of products and services at more competitive prices.
  • 🏃‍♂️Mondelez International is acquiring the majority share of protein snack producer Grenade for a reported £200m, to expand its portfolio of functional and health-focused snacks. Grenade, which was launched by husband-and-wife team Alan and Juliet Barratt in 2010, positions itself as a sports nutrition product owing to its high protein content.
