We made it to the final innings of the year. Or as some call it, separation season - when the slackers separate themselves from the hustlers.

FoodTech founders are rushing to close rounds and hit major milestones, CPG founders are working double time to keep up with Christmas orders, investors are knee deep in diligence and corporates are out chasing end of year results.

Just a little note to say, we see you. Keep pushing through and finish off the year strong.

This week in FoodTech:

  • Europe's FoodTech Soonicorns.
  • Alt-bacon brings home the bacon.
  • FAIRR's report tells a depressing climate tale.
  • DSM's latest acquisition.

The Digest

📈 What’s Up: A survey by EIT Food shows that two thirds of Gen Z consumers believe that our existing food systems are “destroying the planet” and claim to care more about sustainability than older generations.

📉 What’s Down: Beverage companies are facing shortages of glass bottles as we come into the holiday season thanks to international shipping delays, labour constraints and higher material costs alongside the spike in demand for alcohol through the pandemic. Well, we had to make it through somehow!

🦄 We released our list of 50+ European FoodTech Unicorns and Soonicorns - did your company make the cut?

Funds & Funding

🥕 New York speedy grocery delivery service JOKR raised $260M Series B funding and hit unicorn status just nine months after launching. It plans to further expand its operations, which includes a push into three continents at once.

🇨🇭 Swiss investment house Edmond de Rothschild Group in partnership with Peakbridge VC are setting up a $250M+ foodtech investment fund to back early stage companies focused on better nutrition or sustainable food production with checks ranging from $5M-$8M.

🗑️ Boston-based Spoiler Alert raised $11M Series A funding to grow its food waste-fighting ‘liquidation platform’ that allows CPG companies to sell their surplus and short-dated stock to discount retailers.

🥓 Plant-based bacon company Hooray Foods, based in San Francisco, secured an additional $2.7M in extension seed funding to further expand its operations, having already landed in 1,000 US outlets and 180 Canadian grocery stores since its inception a year ago.

🐟 Belgium-based Paleo, which is working on producing meat and fish proteins via precision fermentation, raised €2M seed funding to build an R&D centre, pilot plant and experience centre.

🥼 Estonia’s Gelatex Technologies secured €1.2M seed funding to fund its innovation within cultivated meat scaffolds, which could potentially slash the cost of cell-based meat production.

💸 Find all 15 funding rounds of the week including $65M for the “Shopify for restaurants” and $12M for edible, microbial tags.

Sugar and Protein

🍨 Israeli startup B.T. Sweet is launching its Cambya sweetening platform, which is a plant-based one-to-one drop-in sugar replacer which boasts additional fibers and doesn’t require masking agents.

💪 New snack brand BodyBar Protein is on a mission to reset the bar category with its line of clean-label, better-for-you protein bars which offer a healthier alternative to traditional nutrition bars.

🧫 There’s a new wave of cell-based startups working on gourmet cuisine. French startup Gourmey is developing cultivated foie gras, Hong Kong-based Avant Meats has gone after Chinese delicacy fish maw, and others are working on shark fin.

🥩 Meati, which makes whole-cut meat alternatives from mycelium using biomass fermentation, appointed General Mills exec Scott Tassani as its president to help “pave the way to the larger market”.

🛒 India’s top food delivery startup, Swiggy, plans to invest $700M in its express grocery delivery service, Instamart. The service is now available in 18 cities, having launched in just two a year ago.

Plant-Based News

🦃 Award for best looking vegan turkey goes to Julie Catona for this hauntingly realistic faux-turk. Ross Mackay founder of Daring Foods told us it was 100% fan-made by a "creative community member" who used off-the-shelf packets of Daring Foods Chicken and finished with a soy-based skin. Sign us up for some next year!

🇨🇦 Canadian plant-based dairy company Plant Veda has launched a new range of probiotic yoghurt alternatives, PlantGurt, which is due to roll out in retail in early 2022.

🥚 Piperleaf launched a plant-based egg product, Eggishh, in India, to tackle the massive volume of eggs consumed in the country every year. It comes in a premixed format with a longer shelf life than most liquid plant-based egg alternatives.

🐖 Hong Kong plant-based pioneer Green Monday is reportedly on a mission to raise a further $100M, and is working with Bank of America Corp. to work out the details.

🏭 Planterra Foods, a plant-based subsidiary of meat giant JBS SA, has opened a new manufacturing facility in Denver, USA, to meet growing consumer demand.

🎤 Musical artist Cardi B launched Whipshots, a shelf-stable, vodka-infused, dairy-free whipped cream, developed in partnership with Starco Brands to “revolutionise the cocktail industry”.

❌ From January 2022 Copenhagen-based restaurant Geranium will remove animals from its menu. The restaurant, which is ranked second on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, is the latest in a series of fine dining establishments to make the move to plant-based foods.

Big Food & Acquisitions

🐄 New analysis from activist investor group FAIRR tells a depressing tale: while some major protein producers have made progress in terms of tackling climate change, the majority remain “unprepared” for the task, with processes which are “outdated and unattractive”. Image source: Agfunder.

🚗 7-Eleven is partnering with autonomous delivery tech startup Nuro to launch California’s first autonomous delivery service, available to customers within 25 minutes of its Mountain View site.

🇳🇴 Dutch chemical giant DSM is acquiring Norwegian pea producer Vestkorn Milling in a deal worth €65 million, as part of its strategy to build its alternative protein business.

🍿 Eagle Foods came up with a new method to consumer test its latest products: it added samples to subscription boxes for snack fans and mailed them out to consumers to try.

🥣 Nestlé is tackling malnutrition with a new affordable sorghum-based porridge, made with upcycled Milo side streams to “valorize raw materials and avoid nutrient loss” and ensure consumers across the world can access nutritious food.

🥚 Kroger has partnered with environmentally-friendly poultry farmer Kipster Farms to produce carbon-neutral, cage-free eggs under its Simple Truth brand.
