The Digest 💡

💰Public: SPAC listings are providing food companies with a cheaper and quicker avenue for going public than ever before and offering an alternative to the traditional route of getting acquired by a publicly traded conglomerate (which pays much less). Aside from Oatly, at least four more companiesFlow Water, AeroFarms, Stryve and AF Acquisition Corp – are planning offerings this year. And according to insiders, both Infarm and Impossible Foods are rumoured to go public with billion dollar plus valuations.

📈 What’s Up: Chinese agri-food tech companies raised $6B in 2020, a 66% increase year-on-year, despite total private equity and venture capital across all industries in China dropping by more than half.

Oatly
’s sales hit $421.4M worldwide in 2020, a 106% increase year-on-year. However, the Swedish oat milk giant is still operating at a loss ($60.4M total loss in 2020), but it believes it can become profitable as it increases its production capacity and continues to expand globally.

📉 What’s Down: Some F&B categories saw a decline in sales through the pandemic, as consumers became more mindful of their health...and their wallets. High-sugar sodas struggled, and mid-range alcohol crashed as consumers chose to trade up or down for a premium or budget experience.
