📈 What’s Up: Sales of natural and organic products are set to soar to $300 billion by 2023 and $400 billion by 2030, despite demand easing off after the spike in 2020.

📉 What’s Down: New data from IRI shows that private label brands have struggled to keep up with brand name products through the past year, with brand names taking 79.1% of each food dollar spent.

💸 New In Funding

💰 Boston-based synbio startup Ginkgo Bioworks has gone public on the NYSE, having raised $1.6 billion through a SPAC deal with Soaring Eagle and bringing its estimated value to $15 billion.

🍦Perfect Day, Inc. raised $350M Series D funding to further expand its business, bringing its total funding to date to $750M, and is now valued at approximately $1.5 billion. According to sources close to the company, Perfect Day is poised to IPO within the next year.

Partnerships & Expansions

🔬 Hong Kong-based cultivated seafood startup Avant Meats is partnering with Singapore’s tech innovation agency A*STAR to set up a joint R&D lab and pilot production facility in the city-state by 2022.

🧈Chinese plant-based startup HEROTEIN, formerly known as HERO Protein, has entered into a strategic partnership with US cell-based fat producer Mission Barnes to bring the first hybrid plant-based/cultivated meat products to China.

🌿Infarm x Roy Kombucha collaborated on a limited time kombucha which saw the two Berlin-based companies bring the best of vertical farming and fermented beverages together.

🏭One to watch: Future Fields, creators of cost-effective growth factors, are moving into a bigger facility - likely thanks to their seed raise back in February.

🇦🇪 Impossible Foods has had a busy week: first announcing its expansion into the UAE with the debut of its flagship burger in Dubai, alongside its partnership with 7-Eleven Singapore, whose 350 outlets will soon feature Impossible beef-based ready meals.

🐥 UK-based vegan fried chicken brand VFC has launched across the US via foodservice. Co-founder Matthew Glover commented: “The US gave the world KFC, and we’re keen to return the favor with VFC – an alternative which is kinder to animals and our planet.”

Plant-Based

🍯 Vegan Baklava. Yes our mouths are watering, yes it’s vegan. This week MeliBio unveiled the world’s first real honey made without bees. Check out this review of the molecularly identical honey, made via synthetic biology, precision fermentation and plant science.

🧀 Singapore based Sophie's BioNutrients shared an image of what could be the world's first microalgae-based cheddar cheese (and it looks pretty good).

🍗 Beyond Meat is launching its plant-based chicken tenders into US grocery stores from October, starting with Walmart and other major chains, but with plans for further rapid expansion.

🔪 British vegan brand Wicked Kitchen, created by Chef Derek Sarno, has launched the first plant-based whole cut lamb roast, made with king oyster mushrooms and a pea and wheat protein blend.

Big Food

🍸 Diageo has opened its first carbon-neutral distillery in the US as part of its strategy to remove fossil fuels from alcohol production over the next decade. The end result is not quite as flashy as the mockups presented a year ago.

🍔 Beyond Meat and Kerry's teamed up to supply the patties & cheese for the new McPlant burger in the UK. The plant-based burgers have the perfectly sad and slightly floppy look of a McDonald’s burger that we know and love. #NailedIt.

🍨 Ben & Jerry’s latest innovation is a limited-edition flavour called Change is Brewing, featuring a combination of cold brew coffee ice cream, marshmallow swirls and fudge brownies, and designed to “transform the nation’s approach to public safety to one that prioritises community needs”.

🥛 Danone North America is launching a “dairy-like” segment of plant-based milk products to develop alternatives which are as close as possible to cow’s milk in terms of taste and sensory attributes such as mouthfeel.
