Who doesn’t love discovering innovative new products? Here at FoodHack it’s our mission to find and feature innovative products made by some of the most inspiring startups from across the globe on our Discovery board. Each week we scour the globe for nine new ideas, and you vote for your favourites to make our top three.

This week’s Discovery had nine stellar competitors, including frozen plant-based meals and snacks made from roasted beans and peas, and it was on FIRE as more of you than ever before got involved in voting for the best of this week’s lineup. Speaking of which, here are the top three:

Global travel is pretty much not allowed at the moment, which sucks for those of us who love to explore the world and its different cuisines, especially at a time when a lot of hospitality options are either temporarily or permanently closing their doors meaning we are forced to dine at home. This is where Swiss meal delivery company Nik’s Fudo comes in, as a platform with a cohort of chefs from around the world who prepare fresh, ready-to-heat meals for consumers. But the really cool part is that anyone can get involved and provide exceptional meals from their own homes. It’s all above board, as every chef’s kitchen is assessed and certified according to Geneva’s food health and safety standards, and the dishes are developed with a balanced diet in mind, alongside a policy of zero waste and zero plastic.

Nik’s Fudo have turned global cuisine into community cuisine, and it’s a superb platform for any fabulous cooks, particularly those who may be struggling to gain employment, to earn a little extra cash.

2. Lupinta | Malmö, Sweden

Soy allergies are present in around 0.3% of the global population, which doesn’t sound like a great deal, but when you consider that a significant proportion of plant-based products are made from soy, the presence of any allergen can severely restrict production capabilities and customer base. Plus, global demand for soy is on the rise, which means that it’s being shipped all over the world at great cost to the environment.

Enter Lupinta, based in Sweden, who produce tempeh, a fermented bean fillet packed with fibre and protein, made from locally grown Lupin beans. Its mission is to convert local farmers to Lupin production, reduce imports of soy from outside of the EU, and thus reduce the associated negative risk to the environment. Its tempeh is a natural, sustainable, plant-based protein product with minor environmental impact; what could be more on trend than that?

Most of us don’t lead perfectly healthy lives (you can go ahead and polish your halo if you do), and there’s a definite shift towards dietary supplements (for which the global market is worth $123Bn) and functional foods which contain all the extra ingredients we need to feel at the top of our game. Functional chewing gum has been around for a while and the market is worth around $7Bn; think about all the nicotine-cessation gums that are out there, for example.

But Swedish startup Shewy has created a functional chewing gum which acts as a vitamin delivery system, because buccal absorption is very effective. It comes in a variety of flavours, infused with different combinations of vitamins and caffeine depending on the particular boost you may need, and it claims that chewing gum may have a whole host of other benefits such as anxiety reduction and calorie burn, too.
