Situated in the southwestern part of Switzerland, the Valais region is known for its culinary tradition with flagship products made out of local seasonal fruits. Valais also benefits from a strong agricultural industry, particularly cattle breeding in the mountains and dairy farming in the plains. The wine industry of the canton is the largest in Switzerland. There are also a large number of orchards in the area, including saffron's fields.
